January 20 306.0

Today, I am in my Thoreau mood ............. don't leave the premises of this house and seek perfection therein. Hopefully, "....this too shall pass."

I ate a pint of Ben & Jerry's, Oatmeal Cookie Crunch......... I can see why it was listed as a closeout sale, just couldn't resist though.

We're getting quite a dosage of rain. Right now it's not raining, but the forecast has the moisture coming in for the next three days.

I guess I'll take Nancy for a run around the HOA premises.

Assembling 306.2

I'm trying to assemble an assortment of chores into a coherent time structure. I've got recycling, Taekwondo, house duties, outside cleaning, meals to prepare....... this retirement gig just wears a person out! lol

Things are going well. I have become an oblate candidate at the abbey which is pretty much what I make it to be. I want to try to be on the premises at least twice a week. Official meetings are once a month.

I test for yellow belt promotion tomorrow morning at the taekwondo center. I pretty much have a one on one teacher/learner experience when I attend morning workouts on Monday, Wednesday or Friday. I'm trying to keep in mind to go slowly with this endeavor and not move too quickly.

Sent $25 to the Mercy Fund for Hati. I can't even imagine what the pain and toil must be like. When I experienced no electricity for three days in Guam after a typhoon I thought I was roughing it.

I just now thought about Iradukundu Jean Pierre, the Rowandan boy I now sponsor. I should write to him today. Does that first name rock or what?

Nancy continues to be my day and night partner in life. She's just a sweetheart. I laugh when she runs away from me with tail wagging and expects me to follow on her ventures through the neighborhood.

Daily Inspiration

Prayer is a great source of joy and the best protection from depression. When we talk, Lord, You help me see solutions for a better day.

Actions have consequences. Lord, may my actions not create difficulties, but rather bring peace and joy to my life.

Ask and you shall receive,
Seek and ye shall find,
Knock and it shall be opened unto you.

Janurary 4th

I got in a Taekwondo class this morning. I think this will work out as far as establishing a pattern of exercise. I biked to and from after a bite to eat at Subway. Boise State and TCU are playing in a few minutes so I'll immerse myself in that for awhile. Tomorrow I'm going to check out hot yoga again, but this time I'll be careful with my knees and not lock them when in a particular position.

Kickoff is about to start!

Something to be truly thankful for

I was seated at the computer in our garage when I heard the front doorbell ring. Our new neighbor from across the street had just returned from walking her dog in the park and had seen Nancy there. She tried to bring her back but Nancy wouldn't come along.

I had left her outside the garage in the warm sunlight with the garage door partially drawn down. I had forgotten all about her until Taya came to the door. As I went to the street there was Nancy coming along with her tongue out and ready for big rest. Taya said that she had just about been hit by a car. She would have had to have crossed our busy Mesa Drive at least two times!

Well, she's back and asleep in the back seat of our car. Each morning my arms are around Nancy as I kneel in prayer. I just feel that this is what the spiritual life must be like: innocence unabashedly shameless, calm and without any prejudice. Thank you spirit, I promise Nancy will no longer enjoy the warmth of a concrete driveway ever again without our presence.

Nov 30th 304.6

I just finished my third exercise session of the "Magic Seven" within the last six days. They really don't seem like much, but there must be something to them because I feel so good the next day.

I just had a delicious steamed dinner for one:

Pre-cooked lentils (3/4 cup)
spinach
onion
tomato
green pepper
small squash
cayenne pepper
salt
black pepper
1/2 teaspoon tameric
assorted herbs
EVERYTHING IS STEAMED FOR ABOUT 8 minutes

Add to a mixing bowl with tblspn of Dejon mustard and tblspn of Veganese
and mix. DELICIOUS!

Things are going well.

Nine Months 306.4

I received my nine month AA token of achievement this morning. It is kind of startling that I am half way through the college football and NFL schedule without any suds. Miracles do happen.

I've got to go to recycling today and then I'll do a bicycling trip to POPA (Prince of Peace Abbey).

Tonight, I'll to a large gathering of AA in Vista. Somehow our particular morning meeting group volunteered to set up the meeting site for tonight. So it's a full schedule for today.

I was going to ride my bicycle to this morning's meeting without Nancy, but no matter how quiet I was she got down off the bed at the right moment of departure and laid a guilt trip on me so I drove with her to the meeting instead.

That's about all for today. The weather is around 70 degrees and sunshine and I'm lovin' it.

Sunday night

I was quite proud of myself tonight. I spent an entire afternoon at the abbey and didn't think about the Chargers/Giants game at all. I didn't find out the score by asking, but merely by over-hearing someone talking at a meeting.

When I got home it was dark. I took Nancy out for her run. Everything was going well when she stopped to add some liquid fertilizer to a corner lawn. I rode my bike a little past the corner and waited. She charged across the street and jumped the curb and ran smack into a cement wall. Fortunately, she wasn't hurt but only stunned and confused. A couple of days ago the vet said her eyes were fine and that the only way she would be able to tell if something were wrong with Nancy's eyes would be to conduct a microscopic inspection......translation: a lot of money. I'll just have to keep her on leash near cement walls ....... much cheaper. I felt so bad for her. I am so attached to her it is hard for me to leave without guilty feelings.

Ernie emailed me tonight and suggested if we were to meet at the USD ticket office prior to the game next Saturday that in all likelihood we would be the only ones there since the game is being played in Minnesota. Back to the drawing board.

Sunday Stuff 305.4

A nice little bite to the weather, not too cool but not warm.

My body is feeling pretty good. I've noticed that soreness is not with me and that the knee is working like it's supposed to. Still doing the vegan thing. I will ride my bike to a store about four miles from here for some basics. Baby spinach is my main vegetable ingredient in all of my dishes.

I'm riding up to the Prince of Peace Abbey in a few minutes to see what's going on. It's a pretty good hill so I'll probably be doing some walking.

I took Nancy to the vet the other day and she is in fine health. It was pointed out that she has the beginnings of gum disease so hopefully I'll remember to brush her teeth occasionally.

I'll be taking the train and riding my bike to the University of San Diego football game next Saturday. I'll meet Bill Erne (known him since 1951) and then maybe do an after-the-game Mexican food thing.

So that's the happenings around Oceanside.

Yesterday 303 Today 305.6

We had a great visit in Portland with all of the gathered clan. All aboard looked healthy and fit. Watching the bonding between Avery and Dylan was very warming, what a treat.

The trip home was a nice drive. We didn't push it too hard which meant that we did overnights in Newport, OR and Santa Nella, CA.

Today, I picked up our mail at the post office after riding a bike with Nancy at my side to a meeting. After that I picked up two developed rolls of film which turned out nicely.

I had visions of applying myself towards working out, but I overdosed on a foot long veggie Subway so I'm just typing this and juggling things around in my head.

I feel that things are falling into place as far as weight reduction and increased strength production.

I have to go to Discount Tires for a 5,000 mile rotation as well as pick up a sympathy card for Dot Reilly and her family. Al passed away Sunday after a prolonged bout with Alzhemer's.

So things are going well and getting back to normal. November 10th will signify 9 months of sobriety. February 10th will be the one year anniversary date. After that you won't hear much mentioned of the program though I will still be involved; enough is enough, not only of drink, but of celebration too.

Monday Morning 309.6

I've been up since 4:30 a.m. The Zyrtec I'm taking at night seems to help me sleep more soundly, of course not listening to the radio helps. Yesterday, I got in about two hours of bicycle riding so I think that helped getting me to sleep.

I think I'll go bike riding again. This time I'll head eastward on the bike trail. Depending on how I feel, I might ride all the way to Vista and then catch the Sprinter home ..........maybe.

The night before last I was up early picking up my room. I have about six pair of reading glasses throughout the house. Usually I am lucky to know where any two are at any given moment, hence my solution is to overload. Anyway, about six months ago I bought some very good (very expensive) glasses and it wasn't more than three weeks and I couldn't find them so when I picked up a glasses case and found a pair inside it never occurred to me that these were the premier ones. Anyway, it finally dawned on me after wearing them for awhile that they felt different and then I noticed the bifocal arrangement. It was as if Christmas came early! The small things in life can be so exciting. I'm wearing these puppies right now and they'll stay next to me or on the bridge of my nose all day; they are so lightweight.

Stuff 308.2

Something I've been doing the last couple of days, since I've become aware of the necessity to daily drink eight glasses of water, is that I now have a full pitcher of water in my bedroom. In addition to that I have conspicuously posted a picture of a glass of water which says "eight a day." I haven't forgotten to meet my quota since practicing this.

Yesterday afternoon I rode the bike just in the local area of our HOA. I came up with the idea of taping my digital egg timer to the handle bars and thereby have an easy visual of keeping track of exact time within the context of the 5 minute 20/10 routine. It worked out slick. There's a big hill that is fully viewed from our kitchen window so I think I'll try it and see how the workout breaks down on this particular trek.

The temperature right now is in the sixties so I think I'll spend some time in the garden and after that attack my bedroom since I have stuff all over the floor as a result of adding a drafting table to this limited area.

I'm looking forward to the Monday Night Football program. Minnesota vs. Green Bay. It should be a highly emotional game. Who would have thunk the Broncos and the Chargers to be where they are respectively? I love what Drew Brees is accomplishing with the New Orleans Saints. The dufus, AJ Smith, who poses as the Chargers general manager traded him away in favor of his homey, Philip Rivers. Chargers aren't going anywhere as long as this A-hole is in charge.

Garage Sale 307.8

"When the going gets tough the tough go to garage sales."

I was pedaling the bicycle towards home when I saw some "stuff" in a driveway. Naturally I stopped. For two hundred and ten dollars the seller delivered a 48x30 drafting table, lamp, chair, brush, pencil sharpener (no draft pencil, somebody liberated it) and a couple of tubes which look like they could house a portable cruise missile. We had to take the bedroom door off its hinges in order for it slide through. Joy and I will go to Staples today to find a mat covering for the rug.

The bedroom is beginning to look less like a bedroom and more like a clubhouse. Nancy and I are now designing secret decoder rings to wear when we want our privacy, non members must knock first. Outside, I moved the bird bath so it can be seen while lying in bed. The Health Rider (HR) is just outside the sliding glass door. The raised concrete block lined garden remains still fallow, but not forgotten and it too can be seen from the mattress. It's just a cool little gathering place.

I didn't finish Louis Lamour's book as planned, but Hopalong Cassidy has the situation well in hand and just killed two hombres and let another skidattle from the ranch.

Yesterday, after a noon meeting, I met a fellow in his 40's who expressed to me an interest in exercising. There was a pretty good connection between us so I might possibly have an exercise partner.

I guess I could write about how good another of my food concoctions tasted, but I'll spare the reader. That said, a condensed recipe version would be: Brown rice, lentils, assorted veggies and seasoning; steamed then everything tossed in a mixing bowl and a tablespoon of Vegenaise added and there it is, heaped on a plate steaming like Mt. Vesuvius ready for worship.

Another Saturday 307.8

Yesterday was a full day for me. A meeting, some Lumosity, shopping at Costco and a movie in Vista topped with some night time Health Rider exercise.

The movie was Michael Moore's, Capitalism, I enjoyed it. Nothing radical just observations of what has taken place over the years and some stark pictures of plant structures that no longer exist. The difficult thing for me to grasp is true poverty, i.e. when you don't have money and you're being literally cast out onto the streets. I feel so fortunate to have a pension and social security.

I feel like the psychological barrier is being lifted and I'm slowly getting my energy back and an exercise routine in place.

I am reading a Louie Lamour western novel. Actually I'll finish it today, it's very light reading and refreshingly relaxing. I didn't realize it, but he is the author who created the character of Hopalong Cassidy.

Not a whole lot on the agenda. There's an open house at the fire station just down the hill from our house so I'll probably coast the bike down and have a look see. Of course, there will be some football today. Hopefully I'll squeeze in some yardwork if I CHOOSE to do so :)

My best pal, Nancy, needs some exercise too so that is on the agenda.

Avery called me the other day to say hello. What a treat! It will be fun to see her again in Portland. Avery and Dylan, what a pair to think about. How the days go by so fast when there is a special event about to take place.

You'll notice the gradual drop in weight. I suspect there will be more consistency in weight reduction. The great thing about my outlook is that I am more than happy to see losses in tenths rather than pounds. There's plenty of time to reduce; I am in no hurry to count my six packs. Six packs resulted in my loss of six packs, how's that for an observation?

Good to Go 308.8

I've concluded that my favorite steamed vegetable is baby spinach. I'm now finishing an assorted steamed concoction with quite a bit of spinach. As I've stated before I am amazed at good some of this stuff tastes!

Here's the following for today's cuisine masterpiece:

- a variety of pre-cut veggies (stir fried choices)
- baby spinach
- 1/2 microwaved yam
- fist sized cabbage chunk chopped
- 1/3 cup of chopped onion
- small chopped jalapeno pepper
- small pieces of 2 corn tortillas
- 1/2 cup of cooked brown rice
- 1/2 cup of cooked green lentils
- choice of any kind of seasoning
- 2-3 tablespoons Grey Poupon mustard (slightly watered, pour on top while steaming)

Steam to satisfaction then dump into bowl and mix in 1 tbls of Vegenaise spread.
______________________________________________________________________________________

I got my Health Rider exercise in last night just before bedtime. Finally, I got started! Today, a short ride on the bike path to the beach and return.
_______________________________________________________________________________________

I've got plans today. Whatever I accomplish I'll blog about.
_______________________________________________________________________________________

It's not about having to do something, it's about choosing to do something. From that vantage point it feels less about being hog tied and more about doing the hog tying.

Bike Back From The Shop 310.0

I got the bike back from the shop and it's all spiffy and tuned.

Apparently my HDL cholesterol is not in the proper range, my doctor suggested statins, but I really don't want to unless its a last resort. For the time being I will plunge into an exercise program for the next three months and with the expected weight loss as well as nutritious foods going into my body I will then take another blood test in hopes of a satisfactory reading. I expect a noticeable change.

From this point on I will watch the amounts of food that I eat and I will get a minimum of 20 minutes on the Health Rider per day. With gradual increments I plan on riding 20 miles a day on the bicycle.

I am eliminating the word "procrastinate" from my mind!

Partial test results

Here's a portion of my blood testing results: I should see drastic changes when my weight gets down to 210 lbs or so. Right now I'm plateaued at: 312 but I really haven't been methodically working at any kind of exercise program yet.

I did a Health Rider 20 minute routine yesterday so maybe this is the beginning.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong disease that affects the way your body uses food for energy. The disease develops when the cells of the body become resistant to insulin or when the pancreas cannot make enough insulin, which causes high blood sugar.

Insulin is a hormone that helps your body's cells get needed energy from sugar. When insulin is not able to do its job, too much sugar builds up in your blood. Over time, this extra sugar in your blood can lead to problems with your eyes, heart, blood vessels, nerves, and kidneys.

Common symptoms of diabetes are increased thirst, frequent urination, increased hunger, unusual weight loss, and extreme fatigue. But in type 2 diabetes, blood sugar levels rise so slowly that a person usually does not have symptoms and may have the disease for many years before being diagnosed with it.

Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes. People who develop type 2 diabetes often are overweight and not physically active. It is most common in people who are older than 40 but is becoming more common in children. Type 2 diabetes used to be called adult-onset diabetes, or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).

Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or at least delayed if a person maintains a healthy body weight and exercises regularly. Treatment focuses on keeping blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure at safe levels. A balanced diet and regular exercise are effective for many people, but some may need one or more medicines, including insulin, to help control blood sugar levels.

Test Overview

An alanine aminotransferase (ALT) test measures the amount of this enzyme in the blood. ALT is found mainly in the liver, but also in smaller amounts in the kidneys , heart , muscles, and pancreas . ALT formerly was called serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT).

ALT is measured to see if the liver is damaged or diseased. Low levels of ALT are normally found in the blood. But when the liver is damaged or diseased, it releases ALT into the bloodstream, which makes ALT levels go up. Most increases in ALT levels are caused by liver damage.

The ALT test is often done along with other tests that check for liver damage, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and bilirubin. Both ALT and AST levels are reliable tests for liver damage.

Watered body 309.8

I read a factoid sheet the other day about water and the human body; One of its attributes: a properly filled tank (body) could eliminate back and joint stiffness. Five days ago I began ingesting at least 64 ounces of H2O and sure enough, I'm already walking much better, far out! ("Far out"...... oh how I pine for the '60's).

I just read an article, Seize The Day, by Derick Lin, in it he constructs a grid 31 X 12 (days in a year) then talks of the fleetingness of a year. I had never considered a graft as such. Before they've either been weekly or monthly.

Hopefully, I'll pick up my bicycle from the shop today. Any money I've saved on gas has been amply replaced by the cost in repairs and upkeep. I do like my bike though, it's a very comfortable and practical ride.

Speaking of rides, congratulations to the Wyoming herd! Dylan and company did 108 miles in two days. Denise bragged about how Collin was so good that he pedaled all 50 miles of upgrade backwards. Does this man have any limits?

Next week there will be a reunion of about eight friends and their wives at John Smith's house in Huntington Beach. Unfortunately Doug McLean won't be there because of physical problems. He has to go under the knife for repair to his neck or he'll face the distinct possibility of paralysis. I am guessing he'll go for it within a month's time. Stuff happens.

I have this feeling that I may finish topping off my garden today. It's remained fallow for over a year and a half so this is quite a propitious occasion. Of course there are some college football games on TV so there will be sirens which will be calling me wayward.

It's time for a power packed breakfast. Not too sure what the menu is for this morning, but I am sure it will be nutritious!

Say It Ain't So Joe 310.0

I was thinking of writing a nasty memo to Joe Wilson, the asshole Representative from South Carolina, but I figured a vent here is just fine. When I heard him blurt out to President Obama, "You lie" I thought it was some kind of outsider, not someone from Congress. I've figured this political whore out. He saw all the press coverage the town hall astro turfers were getting so he thought he'd seize the moment and really make some political hay in the biggest town hall of them all.

South Carolina, you can be proud of this warmed over turd.

Wilson was born in Charleston, South Carolina, to Hugh de Veaux Wilson and Wray Graves Wilson.

He was active in South Carolina Republican politics from a young age, participating in his first Republican campaign in 1962. As a teenager he joined the campaign of Congressman Floyd Spence, later working as an aide to Senator Strom Thurmond.

Wilson obtained a bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee University in 1969, obtained a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1972, worked as a real estate attorney, and co-founded the law firm Kirkland, Wilson, Moore, Taylor & Thomas[1] in West Columbia, where he practiced for over 25 years. Wilson was also a Judge in Springdale.

From 1972 to 1975, Wilson served in the United States Army Reserve, and then as a Staff Judge Advocate in the South Carolina Army National Guard assigned to the 218th Mechanized Infantry Brigade until retiring from military service as a Colonel in 2003.

In 1981 and 1982, during the Reagan Administration, Wilson served as Deputy General Counsel for former Governor Jim Edwards at the U.S. Department of Energy.

Wilson was elected to the South Carolina Senate in 1984 as a Republican from Lexington County, and never missed a statutory session in 17 years.[citation needed] After the Republicans gained control of the chamber in 1996, he became the first Republican to serve as Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee. Wilson was a member of the Columbia College Board of Visitors and Coker College Board of Trustees.

To think that a person with such experience would commit an egregious error in judgment as this is unthinkable. He's an opportunistic political whore who certainly would have claimed all of the glory for such a despicable display of bad manners if only his cohorts would have gone along.

He contritely called the White House last night and apologized only because he didn't get away with it and not because he felt bad that his actions had been in poor taste. He's a racist just like all of the birthers and death panelists are. Joe, I despise every sinew, every drop of blood and every hair on your head ( btw I don't see too many on that comb over dome of yours).

"Say it ain't so, Joe" was a banner headline in 1919 about the infamous Chicago Black Sox betting scandal. The asshole Joe I'm writing about collects a bunch of health benefits and salaried tax money from the United States Government and then turns around and rants about how corrupt DC is. Raw Story points out that, "Among Wilson’s top contributors are the American Hospital Association, a lobby group that represents the interests of hospitals and health networks, and the American Medical Association, which represents physicians."

Joe, you have a great gig...... please say it ain't so.

Magic Number? 307.6 redux

I just hate it when I push the wrong key and send out blank blogs.

So perhaps 307.6 lbs is the magic number which makes arthritic pain in my knees subside? I am at 98% recovery now; what a relief!

Went out just a while ago and bought a veggie Subway Submarine Sandwich, then went to the Z-Market and purchased an avocado. I just couldn't resist buying some homemade salsa with ever so little shrimp in it to add to the sandwich. My first backslide since becoming a vegan.

I'm moving right along with the Luminosity.com thing. I figured with all of the scientific information out there on preventative steps to ward off dementia that I might as well jump on the band wagon. I've really progressed in skill level in the two or three months that I've been at it. I'm even in the 90 percentile group of one set of skills (since I can't remember offhand it surely can't be about memory lol :)

Not a lot going on. After this post I'll finish the other half of the sub sandwich and listen to lecture #7 about the Spartans. After that I think I'll try to give the car its first wash in over a year! Then Nancy will get her run around the neighborhood and I'll go inside and finish watching Top Gun ( I haven't watched TG for at least six months, I'm slipping ).

Somewhere I am going to try to figure out some kind of exercise scheme. I think my shoulder is ready now for some body weight.

Got to take my bike in for some sprocket inspection....... it's making clattering noises. Guess I'll drop by Cream of the Crop and pick up some vittles while I am in the vicinity.
